Put simply, hyperventilation is "breathing fast," or overbreathing. Anxiety is the most common cause, but if you've never had one before and suddenly start having hyperventilation problems, "you probably should be seen by a doctor." Though it is uncommon it could be connected to something worse than just anxiety, like lung diease, or a blood infection.
Here's a few tips:
1. Breath into a paper bag. Rebreathing into a paper bag will allow the person to replace the carbon dioxide "blown off" while hyperventilating.
2. Sit down, be calm, and relax. You need to slow your breathing. The more tense you are, the faster you'll breath. So relaxing and staying calm is your best bet.
3. Think beyond yourself. Try not to become consumed with thoughts of having another hyperventilation attack, so you won't have another right off.
